Runes of Magic: Next big thing in free online MMO?
Being the gamer that I am I find in the online world there is a sad truth: The number of free online MMO’s is extremely small. Not only that, but who wants a game with jerky graphics or only a few “customizable” character options? Don’t get me wrong. Hats off to all of those programmers out there pumping out the free stuff, but when the word customizable comes with a price tag then it’s no longer a free MMO. Anyway, one day while surfing the Interweb in between upgrades on my Evony(www.Evony.com) accounts I came across an advertisement for a Online MMO that according to reviews could out do WoW. Runes of Magic. Before I took the time to get involved in the game I did a little research. I found the game was completely free to play, had a few reasonable system requirements, and was comprised of a basic free world quest system. I will admit, the client download for this game is a bit lengthy, but after going on and starting my account I found that the game really was a decent game. You are given the basic Male/Female options for your character creation, but then you are given several other options for customizing. I found that despite a few issues with controls for combat and movement, such as the auto movement AI not being able to negotiate turns, overall the game was produced on a reasonable RPG base. The creatures and characters are well defined with well thought out story lines as well as full functional weapon, item, and armor upgrading system. You first start out in a basic movement and action training area, but if you feel up to learning on the fly this mode can be skipped. After this you enter the first of numerous areas full of quests and stories to follow. You are then given a world of options from which quests to take to mounts or even physical appearance. In the end I have found that if you have the system req’s and some spare time, this game is well worth spending it on, and as always: I’ll see you in the game!
